Call-for-Work for "The Creative Eye on the Erie Canal" Bicentennial Exhibit

We invite all artists 18 and older to submit original art inspired by the Erie Canal for a juried Erie Canal Bicentennial celebration exhibit this fall at The Art Gallery at Montabaur Heights!

Submissions for one or two pieces of artwork will be accepted via online form with $30 fee that will be open below from April 13 – June 29. The selected exhibit will be on display from September 8 – December 31.

Please note that after submitting the online form, you will also need to print out your label(s) on page 3 of the Prospectus PDF below and attach to your artwork on the drop-off date.

The Brothers of Mercy is pleased to present quarterly exhibits at The Art Gallery at the Montabaur Heights independent living community at 4530 Ransom Road on our Wellness Campus. The gallery is open to the public daily from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The Art Gallery is part of a “Wellness Through Art” on The Brothers of Mercy Wellness Campus. The goal of the program is to encourage residents to continue thriving by remaining active in the different forms of art they enjoy creating or viewing. Activities that can enhance quality of life for residents include artist presentations, hands-on demonstrations and trips to other art galleries.

The Brothers of Mercy thanks its legacy sponsors for their support of The Art Gallery: Joe Basil Chevrolet, Buffalo Pharmacy, Family Choice of New York, Highgate Medical Group, ACSI, Picone Construction, Hoffman Hanafin & Associates, Inc., and The David & Joan Rogers Family Foundation.

Visitors who come to see the artwork may also enjoy lunch any day of the week between 11 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. in the dining room by calling 716-407-5102 to make a reservation at 24 hours in advance. Lunch is $15 per person.

Mission Statement

The Art Gallery at Montabaur Heights independent living apartments on The Brothers of Mercy Wellness Campus provides residents and Western New Yorkers an opportunity to enhance their lives through the arts by creating value, purpose and engagement.

The gallery is a centerpiece of the “Wellness Through Art” program on the Campus that recognizes the contributions of artists while including residents in enrichment activities that help them thrive at any age.

Through exhibits and presentations, the gallery embraces an atmosphere of beauty, peace and creativity while fostering an appreciation for the arts and instilling fellowship and community involvement.

Artwork sales from the gallery’s exhibits support the Campus Foundation’s mission of sustaining compassionate care for patients and residents.

This is the submission form for artists to join in the celebration of the Erie Canal Bicentennial in a juried exhibit at The Art Gallery at Montabaur Heights (4530 Ransom Rd., Clarence, NY, 14031). Celebration of the Bicentennial of the Erie Canal Exhibit Prospectus & Agreement

September 8 – December 31, 2025

The Art Gallery on The Brothers of Mercy Wellness Campus seeks work for a juried exhibit celebrating the Bicentennial of the Erie Canal. The gallery exhibits work of regional artists that enrich understanding of our surrounding culture, history, beauty, and creativity. The gallery invites viewers to see the world through artists’ eyes, to enjoy, empathize, rethink, understand and wonder. The gallery honors the creative energy of artists and the impact of their work within the campus community and its visitors.

CONDITIONS AND RULES:
Eligibility: Entry is open to all Artists 18 years of age and older and limited to 2 submissions.

Theme: The Art Gallery seeks submission of two-dimensional works that explore the theme of the Erie Canal. Work may be representational, abstract, current, historical, serious, humorous, instructive, or any combination thereof. We are looking for the artist’s response to the theme.

Originality: Your entry must be an original work of art.

Genres: Painting, photography, printmaking (such as woodcut, etching, engraving, and lithography), textiles, cartoons, drawing, etc.

Format: Work must be two-dimensional, prepared for hanging with wire, glazed where needed (using Plexi for dimensions 16” x20” and larger).

• Framed Work must have a professional appearance and be free from damage or blemishes. Diptychs should be in one frame.
• Hanging Wire: Required on all works. No saw tooth hangers permitted.
• Glazing: Where appropriate, works 16” x 20” framed size or larger must be glazed with Plexiglas/acrylic sheeting. Glass is acceptable for smaller work.
• Finished Size: The size of any work including frame must not exceed 26 inches in width or 48 inches in height. Maximum weight cannot exceed 40 pounds.
• Preparation of Digital Images: Digital images that are uploaded in online submission form must be of professional quality, showing only the work, less the matt and frame. Files should be saved to the following specifications - JPEG format with minimum of 1800 pixels on the longer side. File should be minimum 1-2 MB and maximum of 10 MB.

• The title of the works on your entry form is to be the same as the title of the works you upload. It should read as you want it to read in the Exhibition Catalogue and on the artwork labels. Example: Sunset at Black Rock Canal.
• Image File Name: Label your digital images with your initials (first, middle and last), followed by the title of the work and size of the framed work. Example: RM_View_from_Three_Sisters_18x22.JPEG.

• PLEASE Do not include your full name in the file name, ONLY your initials.

MAKE YOUR PAYMENT: After completing the entry form and uploading image of the art at the link above, please pay the non-refundable entry fee for one or two entries at $30 each (U.S. funds only). The entry fee must be paid online when submitting for the exhibit.

SALES POLICY: All submitted work must have a sale price or stated value if NFS (not for sale). No work may be released before the end of show. All sales will be direct between the artist and the buyer. Montabaur Heights staff will maintain the exhibition price list, record the name and contact information of the prospective buyer and provide the artist’s contact information. In lieu of a 25% commission, the artist may remit a donation of 25% of the price listed to The Brothers of Mercy Campus Foundation.

DISPLAY OF SUITABLE ART: The Facility Owner reserves the right to decline the display of Works of Art at the Venue deemed objectionable, unsafe, or not suitable for display at the Venue.

RISK OF LOSS, RELEASE & INDEMNIFICATION: Although the utmost care will be taken in handling the Works of Art, the Artist understands that the venue is open to the public and the Facility owner does not employ security personnel. The display of the Artist’s Works of Art is at his or her own risk. Artist agrees to assume all risk of damage to or loss of his/her own art from whatever cause. Owner’s insurance will not cover losses incurred with respect to the Works of Art at the facility. Artist shall be solely and exclusively responsible to adequately insure the Works of Art. Artists desiring to insure their work are advised to contact their insurance agent directly to purchase insurance to protect against any loss.

Furthermore, the Artist releases and discharges The Art Gallery at Montabaur Heights, Facility Owners, The Brothers of Mercy, Directors, Managers, Officers, Employees and Agents, Volunteers and Community Members (collectively the: Released Parties) from any and all liability for vandalism, theft, damage and destruction of his or her Works of Art while on display at the venue.

The Artist further waives any claim the Artist may have against the “Released Parties” should any loss occur to his or her Works of Art while on display at the Venue.

The Artist agrees to bear the expense of any required repairs to the Venue as a result of the Artist’s drop off or pick up of Works of Art.

The Artist shall indemnify, save and hold harmless The Art Gallery at Montabaur Heights, Facility Owners, The Brothers of Mercy, Directors, Managers, Officers, Employees and Agents, Volunteers and Community Members from any and all claims, demands, causes of action and judgements, losses, costs and expenses, including, but not limited to, reasonable attorney’s fees arising due to the negligence of Artist, their employees, agents or other personnel hereunder, including, but not limited, to any representation, warranty, term and/or condition of this Agreement.

The Artist hereby grants The Art Gallery at Montabaur Heights, Facility Owner and its affiliates, employees and agents the right to reproduce, digitize or photograph the Works of Art for publicity, marketing and educational purposes. The artist also agrees that he/she confirms that the work submitted complies with the specifications outlined in this Agreement, and that the work cannot be removed before the closing of the exhibition.

By completing this artwork(s) submission form and checking the box below, I acknowledge that I have read, understand and agree to the terms and conditions of this Celebration of the Bicentennial of the Erie Canal Exhibit Prospectus and Agreement.
