Speech Therapy

Overcoming Language and Swallowing Challenges

What is Outpatient Speech Therapy?

Outpatient speech therapy is care that aims to improve communication. BOM’s Speech‐Language Pathologists assess speech & language development and treat disorders surrounding speech, language, swallowing, memory and cognition, which can typically result from:
• Stroke
• Head injuries, including concussion or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
• Neurological diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Who Benefits from Outpatient Speech Therapy?

The ST programs offered at the Outpatient Therapy Clinic are for patients who don’t need an extended, inpatient rehabilitation stay at the BOM Skilled Nursing Center. With Outpatient ST, you remain at home and come to the clinic for your therapy appointments.

People who have suffered a stroke or other injury can re-learn how to communicate through speaking, reading, or writing with BOM’s customized programs. Outpatient speech therapy assists those who face challenges with chewing or swallowing during meals (dysphagia), expressing oneself, or understanding the spoken or written word. It also helps to improve memory skills so patients can perform tasks like managing medications, problem solving and utilizing safety strategies.

Our NYS-licensed speech pathologists hold Certificates of Clinical Competence and are certified to provide neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES, also known as Vital Stim). This cutting‐edge technology helps strengthen the vocal cords and muscles of the throat, in order to restore vocal power and facilitate better communication.

Additional services and training include:
• Family Education and Training
• Treatment for swallowing and speech disorders
